The Tennessee Tornado jumped ahead seven runs and survived an hour-long rain and lightning delay on Wednesday night to pick up a midweek win and defeat the Copperheads 7-2.
The Tornado pushed across runs in both the first and second innings, scoring their first run on a Brett Maddox sacrifice fly, while the second run came around on a Lamar Bridges single.
Play would be halted in the top half of the fifth inning with Jeffery Bultinck batting. Copperheads' starter Drew Spear (UNC Ashville) was midpitch when lightning came down just beyond the left field wall, prompting both teams off the field for the initial 30 minute lightning delay. Around 20 minutes into the initial delay, rain began falling, at times heavily, and extended the delay. The game resumed after a 58 minute delay with a Bultinck single.
Tennessee scored twice more in the sixth inning and three times in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Copperheads had only eight baserunners through the first six innings before they strung together three straight baserunners to score their two runs. Will Helms (App. State) and Micheal Radford (Sury CC) both came around and scored on Tyler Zupcic's (App. State) single. The Copperheads would leave two runners stranded at the end of the seventh, as well as leaving runners at second and third in the eighth inning.
The Copperheads will stay at home for a Friday night doubleheader as they host the Carolina Stingers with the first game set to start at 5 p.m with game two to follow.
