The Copperheads fell to the Carolina Stingers on Monday night at home by a 3-1 score.
Brett Higginbotham (Stephen F. Austin) started on the mound for the Copperheads, and didn't give up a hit through three innings. In the top of the fourth, the Stingers' Travis Weaver stuck out, but Copperheads catcher Tyler Tewell's throw to first was high and allowed Weaver to scamper all the way around to third on the error. Thomas Padro delivered the RBI groundout to plate the Stingers first run, before Benji Jackson knocked a Higginbotham pitch over the left field wall to move the lead to 2-0. The Stingers plated their last run in the top of the seventh when Stephen Mullis led off with a double and came around to score two batters later.
The Copperheads Ryan Stetson (Appalachian State) opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff double before Tony Montalbano (UNC Charlotte) connected with a double. Stetson was thrown out at the plate by Stingers left fielder Zach Mosbarger. The Copperheads wouldn't get another baserunner on until the bottom of the seventh, when Montalbano singled. Montalbano would be part of a 4-6-3 double play turned by the Stingers to empty the bases before Tewell (Appalachian State) delivered a solo shot to left for what proved to be the Copperheads only run of the night.
The Copperheads managed only four hits on the night off of the Stingers' Jeff Howell, who went 7 and 2-3 innings before leaving after coming to his pitch limit.
The Copperheads will be on the road this week, traveling to take on the Stingers again on Wednesday night and the Statesville Owls on Friday night before returning home to Hopewell High School for a doubleheader on Saturday against the Owls. The first game will begin at 5 pm, with the second game starting at approximately 7 pm.
