Tornado Blow Away Redbirds By: Jay Bernhardt
Johnson City, Tenn. (June 11, 2008) --- The Tennessee Tornado improve to 5-2 on the season as they defeated the Asheville Redbirds Wednesday, June 11, at Cardinal Park. The Tornado won the contest 11-4.
The Redbirds came out hard as they struck first, but the Tornado got rolling in the third and did not look back. The Tornado scored four runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, and four more runs in the seventh to secure the win. The Tornado finished the nine inning battle with 11 runs off of 15 hits.
Milligan College standout, Frank Newcomb, earned the win for the home team in the game as he put in six innings of work. Newcomb scattered three hits and gave up one unearned run in the effort. Newcomb walked two and struck out seven.
The Tornado were ignited Wednesday by RJ Schenk. Schenk hit a three-run shot to deep right field to spark the four run inning of the Tornado. Schenk went 4-5 on the night with four RBIs and two runs scored. Logan Bowers went 3-4, while he scored two runs. Kyle Muhlsteff went 2-4 for the Tornado, brought in two runs, and scored a run. ETSU’s Bart Roark also performed well at the plate as he went 1-3 and scored two runs.
The Tornado hit the road to take on the Carolina Chaos Friday, June 13. The double-header is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. They return home Saturday, June 14, to take on the Morganton Aggies at Cardinal Park. Saturday’s games begin at 5 p.m.
